March 19, 2022 MJ Kinman Gems and Joy

Workshop Title:
Bite-Size Gems — Create a Small Faceted Quilt

Date:  Saturday, March 19, 2022    Time: 10 AM – 4:30 Eastern

Bite-Size Gems — In this fast-paced workshop, participants will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light using the same single-foundation piecing techniques I use to create my own “diamond quilts”.  MJ will provide a pattern exclusively designed for the Lighthouse Quilt Guild. Students will then learn how to chart the design onto freezer paper; code each piece for color, location, and adjacency; position template pieces onto fabric to achieve the desired light effects; and ultimately create their own unique study in faceted color. Participants will leave the class with an 18” block that can later be hand- or machine-quilted at home.

Please list any other expenses: Participants to supply their own fabric for the class. The fabrics best suited to this project are solids or gradients. It’s best to limit color choices to two hues, with a few values of each. And be sure to bring white and black fabric to add sparkle to the piece. In short, I encourage students to consider using no more than 5-7 different fabrics in their design.

Supply List

  • 36 inch length of freezer paper (standard 18” width); parchment paper or tracing paper will not work with this technique.
  • Colored pencils in the colors of the gem they want to create. However, don’t limit yourself! You may want to make a gemstone reflecting a wide variety of hues and values.
  • Regular pencil
  • Ball point pen or Sharpie marker (black)
  • Highlighter pen
  • Eraser

PATTERN: Participants must purchase One Scrappy Applique Pattern; Click here for
pdf options
If you are a beginner to applique, I would recommend purchasing from one of these fun
Bunny –
Wandering Bear –
Elephant –
Hummingbird –
Shy Kitty –
Swan –
Scrappy Bits Applique book available
FABRIC: Various fabric for the applique piece – while you can choose which size you
would like to do from your pattern – the Mini or Small size are an ideal size for the
workshop time. If you choose a larger design, it may take you a while longer to
complete. This is a great stash buster project. For the collage fabric;
Mini – cut 2.5” strips of 5-10 fabrics or more, as desired, of different fabrics
Small – cut 3” strips of 5-10 fabrics or more, as desired, of different fabrics

THREAD: You will need a clear polyester thread and a thread for the bobbin. For the
finishing options, you will need a thread that coordinates with the background fabric.
APPLIQUE SUPPLIES: check your pattern for specific quantities.
Fusible Web, lightweight & strong – I recommend Mistyfuse
Fusible Interfacing, lightweight & non-woven – I prefer Pellon 906F
Stabilizer – tear away, iron-on – I recommend Sulky Totally Stable
Other Supplies:
Sewing machine
Large Teflon sheets and/or parchment paper to protect your iron and ironing surface
A large pressing surface (an old towel is ideal on a table – please test first)
Rotary cutter
Straight pins
Basting pins or spray – if you are making the cushion or mini quilt.
Marking utensil – I recommend a micron pen or similar. A frixon pen will not work for this
Fray stopper (optional)
NOTE: please check your Scrappy Appliqué pattern for background, batting and other
specific size requirements for your individual project.
Workshop Preparation
Prepare your pattern. If you purchased a pdf please print, align and tape the sheets
together from the pdf as required.
Prepare background. Depending on your chosen project, either a tote, cushion, tea
towel or quilt, please prepare your background fabric before the class. Please note we
will be learning the technique in this class. If the chosen finishing project is not
completed in the workshop time, the instructions are in the pattern.
